A Day in the Life - What types of projects does your team do daily?

  1. School bus drivers are licensed, overly regulated and well-trained school district employees. They follow a planned bus route, making scheduled stops to pick up or drop off passengers communicating with the supervisors via two-way radio during the route. They provide updates to the supervisors and report emergencies, traffic patterns, or accidents.
  2. Transportation Supervisors oversee, coordinate and participate in the daily operations and activities of the Transportation department. They plan the effective and efficient development of routes and oversee assignments of driver routes and special events.
  3. Mechanics inspect school vehicles, engines, transmissions etc. and conduct repairs aiming for maximum reliability. Mechanics troubleshoot reported problems and resolve them in a timely manner. They perform thorough maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  4. Trainers plan and organize a school bus driver training program in compliance with Colorado State laws and district policies and procedures. They instruct prospective and new school bus drivers in the proper methods of operating and maintaining a school bus in a safe and efficient manner. Trainers develop and conduct a program for reviewing and upgrading performance of school bus drivers, school staff preparing performance evaluations based on check rides. Facilitates classroom instruction programs.

What is your favorite team quote or mission?

“The paradox of education is precisely this – that as one begins to become conscious, one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated.” – James Baldwin

What fun team hobby/outing does your team participate in?

Transportation and Fleet Services participate/compete in the Colorado State Pupil Transportation Association Bus Roadeo and Technicians competition. Last year, Jeffco had one mechanic place 2nd in the technician competition.

Share something you are most proud of when it comes to your team or share a proud moment about your team that happened recently.

I am proud of how dedicated our transportation employees are to their students. We have an employee whose home caught on fire the day before the first day of school.

Due to her commitment and dedication to her students, she showed up on the first day of school to transport her students to and from school despite the tragedy that took place the day prior. This employee, like many others on our team, goes above and beyond for our students.

What is your big term goal or project this year?

The Transportation team is working with district leadership to roll out a successful bell time initiative for the 2023 - 2024 school year. Fleet Services will continue to explore funding options to move a percentage of our fleet to clean/cleaner fuel school buses.

Both departments are understaffed by 140 positions, so we will continue to actively recruit and retain employees to provide a high-level experience for all Jeffco students.
